Tax and Making Tax Digital

The Tax tab connects a sole trader to HMRC for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: sync deadlines, import bank statements, review transactions and file quarterly updates.

Who Sees the Tax Tab

  • The Tax tab appears only for a one-person business: Manifold shows it when Sole trader mode is on in Settings, or once you have connected to HMRC. Limited companies never see it.
  • Manifold is a workflow tool, not an accountant. You review and submit every update yourself.

Connect and Sync

  1. 1Press Connect to HMRC. You are sent to HMRC’s own sign-in, where you use your Government Gateway details and grant Manifold authority to file on your behalf. Manifold never sees your password.
  2. 2Press Sync with HMRC to pull your businesses and quarterly deadlines; every date on the page is HMRC’s answer, cached for display.
  3. 3The page then shows the connection, the next deadline, anything overdue, your businesses, and all deadlines with the most urgent first.

Bookkeeping and Filing

  • Import a bank statement CSV against one business. Manifold recognises a Date or Transaction Date column, a description column (Description, Narrative, Details, Reference, Merchant or Payee), and either a signed Amount or separate Debit and Credit columns.
  • Review confirms what each transaction was for; suggestions come from the merchant name and your own past decisions.
  • Each open quarterly update is filed from Ready to file. Manifold shows the turnover, allowable expenses and net profit it sent, plus HMRC’s correlation ID as the receipt.

Troubleshooting

  • Tax tab missing: switch on Sole trader mode under Settings, then Organisation.
  • Import rejected: the message names the column it could not find or the row it could not read; fix the CSV and retry.
